TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is expecting a hajj cost hike amidst soaring jet fuel prices and rupiah depreciation triggered by war in the Middle East. Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Mochamad Irfan Yusuf, said President Prabowo Subianto does not wish for pilgrims to bear said additional cost.
"President Prabowo hopes that whatever happens, pilgrims are not burdened by rising hajj costs," said Irfan during a working meeting with the House Commission VIII in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
The Indonesian government, he said, is working out the real costs of hajj operation this year after the rising global commodity prices. But Irfan ensured that the Prabowo administration is committed to finding a solution to avoid pilgrims having to pay additional fees.
Even with or without any shifts in flight routes, the government is expecting to raise hajj costs.
If the initial Hajj flight route is taken, the Hajj Ministry noted that the average cost per pilgrim rose from Rp33.5 million to Rp46.9 million, representing a 39.85 percent hike.
An even higher increase is expected with a scenario where pilgrims have to take a different Saudi-bound flight route. As the alternative routes taken would add four hours to the trip, the additional 12,000-ton of avtur consumption would raise the hajj cost to Rp51.8 million, a 51.48 percent surge.
The estimate comes from calculations by Garuda Indonesia, which proposed an additional cost of Rp7.9 million per pilgrim at an avtur price of US$116 cents per liter. Meanwhile, Saudi Airlines proposed an additional cost of US$480 per pilgrim at an avtur price of US$1,374 cents per liter.
"This year's Hajj operation is under pressure from increasingly complex global factors, thus requiring strengthened efficiency, coordination, and mitigation to ensure the sustainability of Hajj financing," said Irfan.
