Indonesia's Prabowo Courts German Investment Across Key Sectors

9 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto invited Germany's business leaders and government to expand their investments in the country. He conveyed this while meeting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, June 15, 2026.

Prabowo expressed hope to continue serving an active role in Indonesia's cooperation with the European Union. "Indonesia also invites Germany to expand their investments in strategic sectors in Indonesia," Prabowo said in a joint press conference with Steinmeier after their meeting.

Prabowo cited numerous industries he deems suitable for German investment, including "energy transition, downstream industries, electric vehicles, and the development of the semiconductor industry."

The head of state also invited Germany to take up mining, especially in the critical mineral and rare earth supply chain. "Also in our infrastructure development," Prabowo added.

Meanwhile, President Steinmeier hailed the investment potential created through the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), which has entered the finalization stage.

With IEU-CEPA, he said, small and medium-sized companies from Germany have a greater opportunity to invest in Indonesia. A closer cooperation between the two countries, Steinmeier said, would be beneficial for both parties.

President Steinmeier also highlighted several German companies that have long been present in Indonesia, such as Siemens, Daimler, and Infineon. "This shows that not only is Indonesia an attractive market, it's also an investment destination," he said.

During this visit, Steinmeier mentioned that he brought delegates from major companies, who are "trying to forge a new path towards renewable energy."

When receiving Steinmeier, Prabowo was accompanied by several officials, including Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Minister of Investment and Downstream Rosan Roeslani, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Meanwhile, First Lady of Germany, Elke Büdenbender, accompanied Steinmeier, alongside business, culture, and tech representatives.

German Ambassador to Indonesia Ralf Beste earlier said that Steinmeier's visit sends a signal that Germany is a strong and reliable partner. Steinmeier's visit to Jakarta, the ambassador added, is based on Germany's hope to boost partnership with strong developing countries, such as Indonesia.

Ambassador Beste revealed that the German President will also convene with the Indonesian intellectuals and researchers during his visit on Monday. "During the meeting, they will discuss how Indonesia views current global changes geostrategically," said the German Ambassador.

Beste expressed hope that Stainmeier's visit could be reciprocated by Prabowo Subianto.
