Indonesia's Mount Semeru Records 36 Eruptions in 7 Days

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia, has shown increased volcanic activity in recent days, though its eruptions remain relatively small. According to the Geological Agency’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the ash columns have so far reached no more than one kilometer above the crater.

On Monday, August 25, 2025, the 3,617-meter-high volcano erupted four times. The first eruption occurred at 06:00 AM WIB, sending an ash column some 700 meters above the crater.

“This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 116 seconds,” reported Sigit Rian Alfian of the Semeru Volcano Observatory Post (PGA).

At 07:22 AM WIB, Semeru erupted again, producing an ash column of around 500 meters. Seismographs recorded a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 135 seconds.

Less than two hours later, another eruption sent a column of white to grayish ash soaring one kilometer high, drifting northwest. This was recorded with a 22-millimeter amplitude and a duration of 166 seconds.

By late afternoon, at 04:01 PM WIB, Semeru erupted once more, spewing ash up to 600 meters with a recorded amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 107 seconds.

Over the past week alone, Semeru has erupted 36 times. Since the start of 2025, it has recorded 2,309 eruptions, making it the most active volcano in Indonesia.

Alert Status and Safety Measures

The Geological Agency currently maintains Semeru at Level II (Caution). Residents are advised to stay clear of the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to eight kilometers from the summit.

Beyond that zone, no activities are permitted within 500 meters of the riverbanks, as pyroclastic flows and lahars may extend up to 13 kilometers from the crater.

“Residents must also avoid a three-kilometer radius from the summit due to the risk of falling rocks,” said Geological Agency head Muhammad Wafid.

He urged communities living near the mountain to remain vigilant against potential pyroclastic flows, lava streams, and lahars along rivers and valleys originating from Semeru, particularly Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as smaller tributaries connected to these rivers.
