Earthquakes were once again felt in the area of Karawang, West Java, on Monday early morning, 25th of August 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a 3.2 magnitude earthquake precisely at 03:27 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
The earthquake's epicenter was known to be on land, 15 kilometers southeast from the center of Bekasi Regency. The depth of the earthquake was relatively shallow, at only four kilometers. "The earthquake was due to the activity of the West Java back arc thrust," said the Head of BBMKG Region II Tangerang, Hartanto, in a statement released after the earthquake.
The BMKG stated that the earthquake was part of a series of aftershocks following the 4.7 magnitude mainshock on Wednesday night. At that time, the tremor reached an intensity of III-IV on the MMI scale and caused damage in Karawang, Bekasi, and West Bandung. According to the BMKG, the trigger was activity on the West Java Back Arc Thrust Fault—formerly known as the Baribis Fault—in the Citarum segment..

The recent earthquake impact was measured in the Karawang area with an intensity scale between II-III MMI. As if it were an earthquake during the day, the tremors were felt by some people inside their homes and caused light hanging objects to sway, while others felt it as if there was a passing truck inside their homes.
Meanwhile, in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, the earthquake was felt with a II MMI intensity scale. So far, according to BMKG, there have been no reports of building damage as a result of the earthquake. The public is reminded to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable rumors.
On a separate occasion, the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, Daryono, stated that the earthquakes in Karawang and Bekasi that caused damage this year and in 1862 have become significant records in the seismic history of West Java. "A record where the West Java back arc thrust is a type of uplift fault that deserves to be wary of," he said.
