Indonesia Reveals ASEAN to Prioritize Negotiations on Trump Tariffs

3 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - About three days left before the United States government implements reciprocal tariffs, or Trump's tariffs. The Indonesian government has decided not to take retaliatory measures and has pushed for an agreement with ASEAN countries.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto leads the negotiation and cooperation efforts. "ASEAN will give priority to negotiations. So ASEAN will not retaliate," said Airlangga after a meeting with ministry officials and businessmen at his office on Monday, April 7, 2025.

Reciprocal tariffs are additional tariffs imposed by the United States on countries with a trade surplus with the U.S., while the U.S. has a trade deficit with those countries. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the implementation of reciprocal tariffs to several countries worldwide on April 2, 2025.

Indonesia is subject to a reciprocal tariff of 32 percent. Other ASEAN countries are imposed with relatively higher tariffs, such as Vietnam with a reciprocal tariff of 46 percent, followed by Cambodia with 49 percent, and Thailand with 36 percent. On the other hand, countries with lower tariffs than Indonesia include Malaysia at 24 percent, the Philippines at 17 percent, and Singapore at 10 percent.

He stated that the U.S. government is still waiting for a negotiation proposal from Indonesia until the official tariffs are implemented on April 9, 2025. At the same time, the Indonesian government is pushing for an agreement with several ASEAN countries.

Airlangga has also met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Both countries agreed to use the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). The Coordinating Minister for the Economy also communicated with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Cambodia, and other ASEAN countries to coordinate their positions.

He mentioned that nearly all ASEAN countries have decided not to retaliate. For instance, Vietnam has even lowered all of its tariffs to zero.

Malaysia will also opt for negotiations, as will Cambodia and Thailand. "We will take the same path. We will choose the path of negotiation. So we are aligning our paths and then aligning the TIFA mechanisms," he said.
