TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, which is set to take place on November 22-23, 2025. The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs has confirmed that several nations have formally requested bilateral meetings with Indonesia on the sidelines of the event.
"We have received requests from the Netherlands, and also from the People's Republic of China, for bilateral meetings," stated Edi Prio Pambudi, Deputy for Economic and Investment Cooperation Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, during a media briefing at the ministry's office in Jakarta on Friday, November 14, 2025.
He noted, however, that the feasibility of these meetings must still be coordinated with the President's demanding schedule during the G20 Summit.
Edi disclosed that a number of strategic issues will be addressed at the G20, organized into three distinct sessions. The first session will focus on sustainable economics, exploring the role of trade and finance in global development, along with issues concerning sovereign debt. The subsequent second session will tackle resilience topics, including disaster preparedness, climate change mitigation, the transition to clean energy, and the global food system.
The third session is dedicated to discussions on artificial intelligence (AI) and critical minerals. Edi emphasized that the critical minerals issue directly aligns with Indonesia's national interests. "This is one of the topics proposed by Indonesia for the G20 agenda," Edi confirmed.
Conversely, Edi highlighted challenges facing the G20 this year and in the near future. Next year, the United States is slated to assume the G20 presidency. However, Edi noted that the US's participation in the G20 process has been notably inactive. Edi suggested that US President Donald Trump generally favors bilateral discussions over engagement within multilateral forums.
Edi explained that the G20 operates with a Troika team, which comprises the previous, current, and incoming presidencies. He pointed out: "Because of the US's lack of activity, this has indeed become a challenge for this year's meeting in South Africa."
Furthermore, Donald Trump has officially confirmed that the US will not be attending the G20 Summit in South Africa at the end of November. As reported by Al Jazeera, Trump cited the boycott as a direct response to his accusation that the black government of South Africa has unjustly targeted and mistreated white farmers.
