Indonesia Moves to Evacuate 15 Citizens from Iran, Says Foreign Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will evacuate 15 citizens in Tehran, following the Israel-US joint attacks on Iran that escalated the region's tensions, according to Foreign Minister Sugiono, adding that the government is making arrangements for the appropriate time.

Dozens of Indonesian nationals will be repatriated by land travel, through Baku, Azerbaijan. "Since the airspace is closed. Evacuating from Tehran requires a 10-hour journey by land to Baku," Sugiono said at the Jakarta Presidential Palace late Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The Gerindra Party politician explained that due to the long travel—first to Baku, followed by a flight to Indonesia—the evacuation procedures take into account the logistics and health conditions of each Indonesian citizen.

"So we can't evacuate them immediately today," he said.

Nevertheless, he said not all Indonesians in Iran are willing to be evacuated, but the government is ready to assist those hoping to return.

Sugiono ensured that he had instructed the Indonesian Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah Soemirat, to take steps for the evacuation process. "Amidst the escalating tension, this afternoon (Tuesday) I have instructed our ambassador in Tehran to take immediate evacuation steps, if there are Indonesian people who want to be evacuated," said Sugiono.

Furthermore, Sugiono explained that the 15 Indonesians are set to be evacuated upon making the request. Meanwhile, a number of Indonesian citizens in other Gulf countries, such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman, which are part of the Gulf Cooperation Council, have yet to request evacuation.

"We can't evacuate people who are not willing. In the GCC alone, there are 27,000 people in Qatar; if they requested evacuation, we would evacuate them," he said.

Sugiono said the Indonesian government continues to monitor the latest developments on the situation in the Gulf region, which is subject to rapid changes.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto instructed his staff to anticipate all potential implications of the conflict. "It was also conveyed by Bapak President that no matter what happens, we must be prepared to face all possibilities," said Sugiono.
