TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has joined the multilateral development bank, the New Development Bank (NDB), after officially becoming a member of the intergovernmental organization, BRICS. The Indonesian government has agreed to deposit an initial fund of US$1 billion or around Rp16.6 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of 16,663 per US$).
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that the deposit is an investment in the bank established by the BRICS countries. "Indonesia's joining is also followed by joining the New Development Bank, and the government has agreed to provide US$1 billion for investment in the New Development Bank," said Airlangga during a national leadership meeting of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in Central Jakarta, December 1, 2025.
Airlangga stated that by becoming a member of BRICS, Indonesia immediately participates actively in the preparation of the New Development Bank. The former Minister of Industry noted that BRICS provides a potential new market access for Indonesia.
Previously, in a meeting with NDB President Dilma Vana Rousseff, President Prabowo Subianto announced Indonesia's decision to join the NDB. Dilma Rousseff, the former President of Brazil from 2011 to 2016, visited the State Palace on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Prabowo stated that after an evaluation by the Ministry of Finance team, the Indonesian government has decided to accept the NDB's invitation to join. "The Indonesian government has decided to join the New Development Bank and follow the procedures and requirements given to us," said President Prabowo as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's website on December 1, 2025.
NDB President Dilma Rousseff stated that Indonesia is an important country in the region and worldwide. She added that Indonesia shares the NDB's vision of supporting sustainable development in developing countries. Rousseff also appreciated Indonesia's clear and long-term development planning. She conveyed that Indonesia and the NDB have shared priorities in the investment sector, including infrastructure, logistics, roads, railways, ports, airports, digital connectivity, and energy transition.
She specifically praised Indonesia's progress with biofuels. "Indonesia is a leading country in biofuels such as biodiesel, with an achievement of 40 percent. I am very impressed with this," she said.
