TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono held a bilateral meeting with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, prior to the commencement of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM). This meeting underscored Indonesia's commitment following its recent accession to BRICS.

Sugiono expressed his gratitude for Brazil's support for Indonesia's full membership in BRICS. "As a new BRICS member, Indonesia appreciates the warm welcome and support from the Presidency and all BRICS members, and is dedicated to strengthening its role in addressing global challenges," Sugiono said on Sunday, April 27, 2025, as quoted from the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs release.

In response, Vieira acknowledged Sugiono's presence and emphasized Indonesia's significant contribution to BRICS. He also expressed his anticipation for President Prabowo Subianto's attendance at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro next July.

The two foreign ministers proceeded to discuss current global dynamics, including the urgent need for climate action and the growing influence of developing nations in promoting multilateralism. Recognizing their roles as strategic partners and middle powers, they encouraged enhanced cooperation at both bilateral and global levels.

In a bilateral context, they explored opportunities for collaboration in food and energy security, education, and health. Sugiono and Vieira highlighted the alignment of their respective governments' priorities, particularly in improving human capital through initiatives such as nutritious meal programs for school children.

Sugiono is currently on a working visit to Rio de Janeiro to lead the Indonesian delegation at the BRICS FMM, held from April 28-29, 2025. The FMM will serve as a platform to discuss BRICS' role in addressing diverse global challenges, advocating for reforms, promoting more inclusive and sustainable global governance, and fostering cooperation with the Global South.
