TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The low-cost airline, Indonesia AirAsia, has opened a direct flight route from Denpasar, Bali, to the Australian city of Adelaide. This route will be the fourth flight connecting Bali and Australia, following previously launched routes from Bali to Darwin, Cairns, and Perth.
The Indonesia AirAsia CEO, Veranita Yosephine Sinaga, said the newly launched route marks the first South Australia-bound flight for the airline. "We are providing access for tourists from South Australia to connect with more than 130 destinations throughout Asia and its surroundings through the AirAsia Group network, with Bali as the main hub," said Veranita in a statement released on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
According to Veranita, Australia is one of the significant growing markets for the low-cost carrier. "Bali is a favorite destination for tourists from South Australia, and we understand the high demand for affordable flights," she said.
Based on data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2024, Australian tourists ranked second as the most frequent visitors to Indonesia, with more than 1.6 million tourists, after Malaysia, with 2.2 million tourists.
This is in line with the data of Australian tourist visits to Bali in 2024, reaching 1.5 million tourists, up by 16.59 percent compared to the previous year’s 1.3 million tourists. "This bolsters the fact that Bali remains a favorite destination for Australian tourists," said Veranita.
Managing Director of Adelaide Airport Brenton Cox said that the presence of this flight service provides more options for tourists. "We are continuing to grow our international aviation network with ambitious targets to reach 14 non-stop international destinations by 2030 and 39 international routes by 2050," he said.
Indonesian Consul General in Sydney, Vedi Kurnia Buana, said that the initiative to launch the new direct route by Indonesia AirAsia connecting Bali and Adelaide not only provides more options for Australian tourists to enjoy destinations in Bali and across Indonesia, but it also encourages Indonesian tourists to explore the historical and cultural richness of South Australia.
