TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Severe traffic congestion on TB Simatupang’s main road in South Jakarta occurs almost every day during peak commuting hours. Public frequently vent their frustration on social media about the situation.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said he had also experienced the congestion firsthand while traveling with his driver.
"Last Saturday, I intentionally didn't have an escort, just the two of us with the driver, I wanted to see it for myself. And indeed, it (traffic congestion) is severe," said Pramono in a press release at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
He instructed the Bina Marga Department, Transportation Department, and Public Order Agency to help ease congestion and regulate the situation on the ground.
Pramono instructed related agencies to help ease congestion by making adjustments on the ground. “The first thing I asked for was to reduce the width of the road dividers. Right now, some of them are unnecessarily large, even with heavy equipment placed on them,” he said.
He also emphasized the need for central government involvement. “I will formally send a letter to the central government, which coordinates the PSN, so that Jakarta can get support in addressing the traffic congestion on TB Simatupang,” Pramono explained.
Regarding traffic management, he called for stricter regulation. “I have instructed that civilian traffic coordinators should no longer be allowed in the middle of the road. The responsibility must lie entirely with the police, the Public Order Agency, and the Transportation Department,” he stated.
