TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Govt Proposes Commercial Status for IKN's Nusantara AirportSpeaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has revealed the government's plan to change the status of the Nusantara Airport in the Nusantara capital city (IKN), East Kalimantan. Puan stated that the Head of the IKN Authority, Basuki Hadimuljono, proposed that the specially operated airport be able to serve commercial flights.
"One of the things discussed by the DPR is the request from Pak Basuki, the Head of the IKN Authority, to change the status of the IKN airport, which was originally intended only for Very Important Persons (VIPs), into a public airport," Puan said at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
Puan explained that the proposal was discussed in a meeting between the leaders of the DPR, the DPR Governance Commission, and the Head of the IKN Authority on Thursday morning. She mentioned that the DPR leaders were represented by Deputy Speaker from the Gerindra Faction, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad; Deputy Speaker from the NasDem Faction, Saan Mustopa; and Deputy Speaker from the PKB Faction, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician then stated that the DPR would follow up on the proposal to upgrade the status of the Nusantara International Airport.
"In the near future, the DPR leaders, along with the DPR members associated with IKN, will conduct an inspection to decide whether the airport is suitable to change its status from being exclusively used by VIPs to being a public airport," she said.
According to Puan, the meeting also discussed a proposal to expand the size of houses built in IKN. Puan added that the DPR would also consider the feasibility of this proposal. "After that, we will decide whether we agree or not, and other necessary matters," said the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.
