TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Manpower's Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) has drawn attention to the growing phenomenon of Indonesian migrant workers operating online gambling in Cambodia. The Director of Cyber Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers, Commissioner General Raja Sinambela, stated that the promise of high wages has driven many to take the risk of working in Cambodia.
"Working as an online gambling operator seems to be a trend. One person returns, leaves to bring four others there," Raja said during a discussion at the Central Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) building on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
Raja highlighted that Cambodia's regulations allowing the online gambling industry have created illegal job opportunities for Indonesians. However, Indonesia and Cambodia do not have a mutual agreement for the placement of migrant workers.
According to Raja, the Directorate of Cyber Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers has attempted to block and take down postings of job vacancies by online gambling operators in Cambodia. However, new offers continue to emerge.
He mentioned that several Facebook groups frequently post job offers in Cambodia. These Facebook groups have hundreds of thousands of members. "It is very difficult, very modern these days," he said.
Illegal migrant workers in Cambodia often fall victim to human trafficking. Previously, Minister of P2MI Abdul Kadir Karding stated that the victims of human trafficking in Myanmar and Cambodia are predominantly educated individuals. He mentioned that the illegal job offers were made through social media.
"Those who go are mostly educated. That's what I found from 556 people (who have returned to Indonesia)," Karding said at the Ministry of P2MI building in South Jakarta on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Karding cited an example of a human trafficking victim from Semarang, had a professional background as a contractor. However, due to a vendor's late payment, the person was compelled to accept a job offer in Myanmar. The offer came through Facebook.
