TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Vice President of Google for Southeast Asia and South Asia Frontier, Sapna Chadha, revealed that Indonesian users generate almost nine million custom images per day using Google's artificial intelligence (AI) model feature, Nano Banana, from Gemini.
"In Indonesia, one out of every three prompts is purely creative. The Indonesian society creates nine million custom images every day to materialize their ideas, the highest number in the Southeast Asian region," said Sapna at the virtual press conference for the report titled Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026, in mid-July 2026.
The report unveils Indonesia as the most creative country in Southeast Asia in leveraging Gemini-based artificial intelligence (AI).
Google attributes the visual creativity of the Indonesian society to the high usage of mobile devices. 82 percent of Gemini prompts in Indonesia originate from mobile phones, while one in two prompts involved multimodal inputs such as voice or images, not just text anymore.
"Another unique aspect of Indonesia is how they provide prompts. 82 percent of Gemini prompts in Indonesia come from mobile devices. Furthermore, almost half of them use voice or image input to express ideas while on the go," said Sapna.
Director of Google Ads Solutions for Southeast Asia, Samuele Saini, added that Gemini empowers users with numerous creative ideas but lacks artistic abilities to become artists, simply by providing prompts in everyday language.
"Since the launch of Nano Banana in August 2025, users have created over 5 billion images across Southeast Asia. That's a huge number," stated Saini.
In addition to excelling in creativity, Indonesia also notes a high percentage of using the native language when interacting with Gemini. Nearly 70 percent of prompts in Southeast Asia are submitted in local languages, led by Vietnam (89 percent), Thailand (87 percent), and Indonesia (84 percent).
Based on evaluation by AI Singapore through the Southeast Asia Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (SEA-HELM), Gemini is deemed as the best-performing language model for Southeast Asian languages overall.
Sapna Chadha stated that Gemini currently serves over 900 million users in 230 countries and in 70 languages. In Southeast Asia, the number of active Gemini app users has more than doubled in the last 12 months, making it the fastest-growing Google app in the region.
"In Southeast Asia, the number of active Gemini app users has more than doubled in the last 12 months. In fact, this growth has set the fastest record compared to other Google apps that we have ever launched in this region," said Sapna.
She also mentioned that Gemini is the most sought-after AI assistant in countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026 is the first report from Google that details the utilization of Gemini in six Southeast Asian countries. The six countries included in Google's AI report are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The utilization of AI is present in the daily lives of Gemini users in Southeast Asia, from learning, working, to creating.
