TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Director of national flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia, Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan, has announced that the 2025 hajj costs have increased due to the strengthening of the US dollar against the Indonesian Rupiah. He stated that this rise in the US dollar's exchange rate has led to an increase of Rp1.1 million per passenger.
Wamildan explained that initial hajj cost calculations used a US dollar exchange rate of Rp16,000. "While currently, the rate has reached Rp16,845," he said during a joint meeting with House of Representatives Commission VII in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, April 17, 2025, as broadcast live on YouTube via TV Parlemen.
He further clarified that this represents approximately a 5 percent increase in the Hajj costs compared to the initial estimates. "Therefore, from Garuda Indonesia's perspective, we report an increase in costs of approximately Rp1.1 million per passenger," he noted.
Currently, Wamildan mentioned that the initial payment for the Hajj, constituting 40 percent of the total cost, has already been made. This leaves 60 percent of the remaining expenses to be covered in the second, third, and fourth installments.
To mitigate the impact of currency fluctuations, he proposed that these remaining payments be made in US dollars. "Through this forum, we propose that for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th installments, if approved, payments can be made in dollars, thus alleviating our financial burden," Wamildan suggested.
The cost of organizing the hajj pilgrimage (BPIH) for 2025 (1446 Hijri) was previously set by the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government at Rp89,410,258.79, with pilgrims contributing 62 percent and the government 38 percent. This was announced by Abdul Wachid, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Commission VIII's BPIH Working Committee, on Monday, January 6, 2025.
This year's BPIH is approximately Rp4 million lower than the Rp93,410,286 cost in 2024. The cost-sharing arrangement has also shifted, with pilgrims now bearing a larger share (62 percent) compared to last year (60 percent), while the government's contribution has decreased from 40 percent to 38 percent.
The pilgrimage travel cost (BPIH) borne by each pilgrim in 2025 is Rp55,431,750.78, covering flight tickets, accommodation in Mecca and Medina, and living expenses.
