France Summons U.S. Ambassador Over Macron Anti-Semitism Accusation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - France will summon U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner regarding the letter he wrote to President Emmanuel Macron. The U.S. Ambassador accuses Macron of being antisemitic after expressing his support for Palestine.

"France firmly refutes these latest allegations," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated. "The allegations from the ambassador are unacceptable."

The ministry added that France is "fully committed" to fighting antisemitism. As reported by Al Arabiya, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Kushner's comments were contrary to international law, particularly the obligation not to interfere in the internal affairs of a country by diplomatic personnel.

"Furthermore, they do not live up to the quality of the transatlantic relationship between France and the United States and the trust that should result between allies," it said.

In his letter, Kushner argued that hatred towards Jews has surged since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. The Hamas attack triggered a war with Israel that is ongoing in Gaza. The U.S. accuses France of not taking adequate action to address antisemitism.

Kushner sent the letter to Macron on August 25, 2025. He noted that the date marks the 81st anniversary of the Liberation of Paris by the Allies, which ended the deportation of Jews from French soil under the Nazi occupation.

"I write out of deep concern over the dramatic rise of antisemitism in France and the lack of sufficient action by your government to confront it...In France, not a day passes without Jews assaulted in the street, synagogues or schools defaced, or Jewish-owned businesses vandalized," Kushner stated in his letter to Macron.

He argued that although antisemitism has long inflicted wounds in the life of France, the hatred towards Jews has surged since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

The statement is similar to the remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Last Tuesday, Netanyahu accused Macron of fueling antisemitism. Netanyahu stated that antisemitism has surged in France following the French president's announcement last month that he would recognize the state of Palestine.

Macron's office at the Elysee immediately countered Netanyahu. Macron called the accusations vile and mistaken.

Like Netanyahu, Kushner condemned Macron's criticism of Israel regarding the war in Gaza and his plans to recognize the Palestinian state. According to Kushner, these steps fuel extremism, trigger violence, and endanger the lives of Jews in France.

"In today’s world, anti-Zionism is antisemitism – plain and simple," he said.
