TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Governor of the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas), Lieutenant General (Ret.) Agus Widjojo, passed away on Sunday evening, February 8, 2026. This news was confirmed by the Governor of the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas), Ace Hasan.

"The Governor of Lemhanas for the 2016-2022 period, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Agus Widjojo bin Sutoyo Siswomihardjo, has passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2026," Ace said in a statement to Tempo.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of the Philippines passed away at the Gatot Subroto Army Central Hospital in Jakarta. "After being washed at the hospital tonight, the body will lie in state at the deceased's residence in Puri Cikeas," Ace said.

According to lemhannas.go.id, prior to serving as Governor of Lemhannas, Agus served as an officer in the International Commission for Control and Supervision in Vietnam in 1973 and in the Indonesian Contingent for United Nations Emergency Force II in Sinai, Middle East, in 1975.

Before retiring in 2003, Agus served as Chief of Territorial Staff to the Indonesian National Armed Forces Commander and as Deputy Chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) from the TNI/POLRI faction. Agus also holds academic degrees from several foreign universities.

Agus Widjojo holds a Master's degree in Military Art and Science from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, a Master's degree in National Security from the U.S. National Defense University, and a Master's degree in Public Administration from George Washington University.

Agus Widjojo was one of the initiators of the national symposium "Dissecting the 1965 Tragedy, a Historical Approach," held in 2016. The event was the first government-initiated event to rectify the history of 1965.

Several parties consider the former Governor of the National Resilience Institute (Lemhanas) to be the right person to contribute to reconciliation efforts surrounding the 1965 Tragedy. For example, Alissa Wahid, daughter of the late fourth President of Indonesia, Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur, expressed Agus's open-mindedness.

"This reflects how Mr. Agus views the 1965 tragedy and its reconciliation. His comprehensive open-mindedness as a historical actor," said Alissa Wahid, as quoted by Antara in August 2021.
