TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States and China have agreed to establish a military-to-military communication channel aimed to "deconflict and deescalate any problems." This agreement was announced by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday, following a "historic" meeting between the leaders of both countries, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.
As reported by Al Jazeera, Hegseth stated that he reached an agreement with Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun on the necessity of establishing this communication channel.
"Admiral Dong and I also agreed that we should establish a military communication channel to alleviate conflicts and address emerging issues. We will soon have further meetings on this," Hegseth wrote on his X account.
He emphasized that peace, stability, and good relations represent the "best path" for both nations.
"As President Trump said, his historic “G2 meeting” set the tone for everlasting peace and success for the U.S. and China. The Department of War will do the same — peace through strength, mutual respect, and positive relations," Hegseth affirmed.
The "Department of War" is the former name used by the US before it was changed to the Department of Defense.
Dong and Hegseth met on Friday in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM).
Hegseth also held separate meetings with the defense ministers from Australia, Japan, and the Philippines to discuss enhancing prevention and readiness in the South China Sea. "We have an ongoing commitment to ensure peace and stability in the region and remain steadfast in our partnership to maintain peace through strength," he stated on X.
US President Donald Trump also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the port city of Busan, South Korea, on Thursday—a meeting he notably referred to as "G2," or Group of Two.
