TEMPO.COJakarta - The danger of flood and landslides still loom over Agam Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The central and regional governments continue to take a number of handling measures, ranging from extending the emergency response period to deploying heavy equipment. Here is a summary of the disaster management in Agam.

Emergency Response Period in Agam Extended

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) stated that the Agam Regency Government extended the emergency response period because there were still subsequent landslides. The Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, said the latest landslide occurred up to three days before January 4, 2026.

"Agam Regency has experienced several subsequent landslides until three days ago," said Abdul during a press conference on post-disaster handling in Sumatra, Sunday, January 4, 2026.

Subsequent Landslide Threat Still High

BNPB detected cracks in the upstream area of Agam. According to Abdul, moderate-intensity but long-duration rainfall still has the potential to trigger subsequent landslides. "If there is moderate-intensity rainfall but it lasts long, there is still the potential for subsequent landslides," he said.

The government continues to monitor and make mitigation efforts to minimize the impact of further disasters.

120-Meter Landslide Occurred in Ngarai Sianok

One major incident was a landslide in Gebing Ngarai Sianok, Agam Regency. The landslide was about 120 meters high and 15 meters wide, occurring after prolonged heavy rainfall. BNPB confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident.

Two Heavy Equipment Deployed to Anticipate Landslides

The Sumatra River Basin Agency V Padang plans to deploy two heavy equipment units to Agam. The Head of the Sumatra River Basin Agency V Padang, Naryo Widodo, said one heavy equipment was scheduled to arrive on January 3, 2026, and another unit on January 6, 2026.

This deployment is focused on the Kelok 28 area, which still holds landslide material and has the potential to trigger subsequent disasters.

Dozens of Heavy Equipment Deployed by Various Agencies

In addition to the two additional units, several agencies have deployed heavy equipment at the disaster site. The equipment comes from the National Police, River Basin Agency, and the Public Works Agency of Agam Regency. The Ministry of Public Works noted that by the end of December 2025, a total of 341 heavy equipment units had been prepared in the affected areas of Sumatra, consisting of 114 units belonging to the ministry and 227 units from state-owned enterprises.

Number of Evacuees in Agam Continues to Increase

The Agam Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded an increase in the number of evacuees due to flash floods in Muaro Pisang, Pasar Maninjau, Tanjung Raya Subdistrict, to 428 people.

"Previously, there were only 314 evacuees, and now it has increased to 428 people," said the Head of Emergency and Logistics Division of Agam Regency BPBD, Abdul Ghafur. Flash floods in the area have repeatedly occurred due to the overflowing of the Muaro Pisang River.

Residents Moved to Temporary Housing

The Ministry of Public Works has relocated affected residents in Tanjung Raya Subdistrict to temporary housing in Palembayan, Agam Regency. In addition, the government also mobilized one unit of the Mobile Treatment Unit and five public hydrants to meet the clean water needs at the evacuation site.

BNPB recorded an additional 10 fatalities due to ecological disasters in Sumatra on January 4, 2026. The total death toll has now reached 1,177 people, including two victims from West Sumatra. The number of evacuees in Sumatra still stands at 242,174 people, although it has decreased compared to the previous day.
