TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The European Union welcomed the ceasefire between the United States and Israel and Iran, and called for continued diplomatic efforts toward an end to the war.
"I welcome the two-week ceasefire the US and Iran agreed last night. It brings much needed de-escalation", European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a post on X.
"Now it is crucial that negotiations for an enduring solution to this conflict continue," she said.
EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas called the truce a "step back from the brink after weeks of escalation."
"It creates a much-needed chance to tone down threats, stop missiles, restart shipping, and create space for diplomacy towards a lasting agreement," she said, adding that Brussels was ready to support diplomatic efforts alongside regional partners.
Macron calls for ceasefire to 'fully' include Lebanon
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron called for Lebanon to be included in the truce, but commended that the Iran-US ceasefire is a "very good thing."
"Our wish is to ensure that the ceasefire fully includes Lebanon," Macron said during a press conference.
He said that the situation in Lebanon remained "critical."
"Hezbollah made a strategic error by attacking Israel and dragging Lebanon into the regional crisis," Macron said, while calling for the Lebanese army to take control of the south of the Levantine country.
He also called for pro-Iranian militant groups in Iraq to be included in the ceasefire agreement.
While mediator Pakistan initially said that the ceasefire deal also included Israel and Lebanon, Israel later announced that it would uphold the truce with Iran but that it didn't cover its offensive in Lebanon.
