Egypt Rejects Israeli Allegations of Hamas Weapons Transfer to Cairo

TEMPO.CO, JakartaEgypt on Tuesday denied an Israeli media report stating that it had proposed to seize Hamas weapons as part of a post-war Gaza plan.

The denial was in response to Israeli media reports, including the state broadcaster KAN as cited by Anadolu, which stated that Egypt had proposed the handover of Hamas weapons to Egypt as an "open deposit" under what was described as a "day-after" plan for Gaza.

According to the report, the proposal envisioned Gaza being administered for several years by a technocratic government under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority, with Hamas being sidelined from governance.

According to Cairo News, as reported by Middle East Monitor, unnamed senior Egyptian sources confirmed on Tuesday that no such proposal existed.

The sources explained that the proposal put forth by Egypt and Qatar and accepted by Hamas included a 60-day ceasefire.

They added that negotiations for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas would commence on the first day of the agreement's implementation.

Israel demands the disarmament of Hamas for any deal to halt its brutal war in the Gaza Strip.

However, Egyptian government-owned Al-Qahera news outlet, citing Egyptian sources, refuted the Israeli reports. Cairo emphasized that the latest proposal put forward by Egypt and Qatar and accepted by Hamas involved a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza.

Negotiations for a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas will begin on the first day the agreement comes into effect, the source said.

'Ball in Israel's Court'

Earlier on Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said that "significant progress" had been made in ceasefire negotiations and that "the ball is now in Israel's court."

Hamas said on Monday that it had accepted proposals from Egyptian and Qatari mediators for a Gaza ceasefire, without providing details about the content of the proposal.

Israel's KAN public broadcaster, citing unnamed sources, said the new proposal was very similar to the initial plan from U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, which called for the release of 10 living captives and 18 bodies in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire and negotiations to end the fighting.

According to Egyptian media, the proposal called for Israeli forces to be repositioned near the border to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and a temporary halt to military operations for two months to facilitate a prisoner-hostage exchange.

Israel estimates that 50 of its citizens are still in Gaza, including 20 who are alive. More than 10,800 Palestinians are imprisoned in Israel, where human rights groups say they face torture, hunger, and medical neglect that have led to many deaths.

Israel has killed nearly 62,100 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has destroyed the besieged enclave, which is facing a famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its war in the enclave.
