TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eddie Howe is reportedly set to leave Newcastle United after nearly five years of tenure as head coach, according to ESPN and The New York Times. The news came just 25 days before Newcastle faces off Liverpool on August 23, for the new Premier League season.
Howe is poised to be replaced by Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli.
The 48-year-old coach hinted at his exit on Wednesday evening following a 4-1 loss to Bristol City in a pre-season friendly, stating that "there has been a lot of change at the football club and potentially more to come."
Howe decided to remain at St. James' Park at the end of last season, but reportedly had a change of heart and told the club he wanted to take a break from football.
According to The New York Times, the situation was amicable and Newscastle were well prepared for Eddie Howe's exit.
But Howe is not the only high-profile departure from the club, as Newcastle lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham over the summer.
Captain Bruno Guimaraes, while hasn't been confirmed, has been linked with Arsenal.
How did Eddie Howe fare during his time with Newcastle United?
Howe was hired in November 2021 to replace Steve Bruce as the manager of Premier League club. He led Newcastle to its first domestic trophy in seven decades. He also saw the Magpies qualifying for the Champions League twice, via fourth-place league finish.
However, despite hefty investment from their Saudi backers, Newcastle underperformed last season, limping to 12th place in the Premiere League.
From 7 January, the club won just five of their last 17 league games.
Who Is Matthias Jaissle?
Matthias Jaissle, 38, signed with Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli in 2023. He has led the club to consecutive Asian Champions League in 2025 and 2026.
The German coach spent his entire playing career with Hoffenheim, and coached Red Bull Salzburg for two season, winning them back to back Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup.
Jaissle's coaching philosophy, according to The Independent, is characterized by high-intensity, attacking football. He focuses on immediate pressure and rapid, vertical play towards the goal.
