TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - To reduce dependence on fossil fuels and minimize environmental impact, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing advanced electric vehicle (EV) technology featuring an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. This research is spearheaded by the Center for Transportation Technology Research within the Energy and Manufacturing Research Organization (OREM).

The project, titled "Multi In-Wheel Motor Synchronization for AWD Electric Road Vehicles," began in 2024 and is expected to continue through 2025, led by Senior BRIN Researcher Kristian Ismail.

Kristian explained that the EVs currently under development utilize in-wheel motors, electric motors installed directly on each wheel, a design that differs from conventional EVs that rely on a single, centralized motor.

"In the AWD system, each wheel has an independent motor. This necessitates a more complex control system to synchronize the movement of all four wheels, especially when the vehicle is turning, accelerating, or navigating extreme terrain," he stated in a written statement on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

Kristian stressed that synchronization between the motors is critical for vehicle stability. "If the wheels do not rotate synchronously, the car can skid or lose stability due to unbalanced torque. Therefore, a centralized synchronization control system is essential to regulate the four motors in real-time," he added.

For 2025, the BRIN research team is concentrating on creating a smarter AWD control system by integrating each motor's individual driver into the central synchronization control unit. The objective is to ensure that all four wheels move precisely and simultaneously, resulting in smooth, efficient, and safe vehicle motion under diverse road conditions.

Kristian hopes this research will resolve existing challenges related to the mechanical and electronic control of multi-motor electric vehicles. "In addition to improving energy efficiency, this technology is also expected to support the development of reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly national electric vehicles," he concluded.
