TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has deployed students from the Statistics Polytechnic, School of Statistics (STIS), to collect data on post-disaster conditions in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The students are scheduled to depart on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
BPS Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti stated that this is the first time polytechnic students have been deployed to a disaster site as part of their fieldwork experience (PKL). She also advised the students to conduct the data collection professionally.
"I also mentioned earlier that the disaster statistics they collect are not just numbers, but will truly provide meaning for data-based policy interventions, making them more accurate," Amalia told reporters at the Statistics Polytechnic, STIS, Jakarta, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
Amalia stated that 510 male and female students were deployed to Sumatra. In addition, there are also approximately 50 additional personnel consisting of BPS employees and polytechnic academics. They will be on duty for two weeks at the disaster site.
BPS Deputy Head Sonny Harry Budiutomo Harmadi added that data collection at the disaster site will cover five sectors. First, data related to housing. Second, data on village infrastructure. Third, data on the social sector, including school facilities, health facilities, and religious facilities.
Fourth, data on the economic sector, such as markets, shops, and rice fields. "The fifth sector, which is cross-sectoral, is actually handled by the government, namely government offices to support public service activities," said Sonny.
The Head of BPS was assigned to coordinate data management within the Task Force for the Acceleration of Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sumatra. This assignment is stipulated in Presidential Decree Number 1 of 2026. Members of the data management division are the Head of the Geospatial Information Agency; the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency; the Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency; and the Director General of Population and Civil Registration.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian to head the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation Task Force. Last week, the government-formed task force held a meeting with the House of Representatives in Banda Aceh.
Tito stated that the government task force is currently preparing various aid programs for disaster-affected areas in Sumatra. One priority is reducing the number of displaced persons. "We think this is important. It symbolizes accelerated recovery," Tito said during the meeting on Saturday, January 10, 2026, as quoted from the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) YouTube live stream.
