TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the death toll from the recent disaster in Sumatra has risen to 1,190 people as of Friday, January 16, 2026, up from 1,189 recorded earlier in the week.
The hardest-hit areas are North Aceh with 231 fatalities, followed by Agam Regency in West Sumatra with 194 deaths, and Central Tapanuli in North Sumatra with 130 fatalities.
BNPB also recorded 101 deaths in Aceh Tamiang and 93 in Central Tapanuli, according to data published on the agency’s Disaster Geoportal on Friday.
BNPB said 141 people remain missing, while the total number of evacuees across three affected provinces has reached 131,500.
The largest concentrations of displaced residents are in North Aceh, which has 54,800 evacuees, followed by Bireuen with 13,900, and Pidie Jaya with 11,800.
The disaster has caused widespread destruction to housing and public infrastructure. BNPB reported damage to 170,050 houses, including 53,412 severely damaged, 45,085 moderately damaged, and 76,553 lightly damaged.
In addition, 215 healthcare facilities, 3,188 schools, 803 places of worship, and 776 bridges were damaged or affected.
Earlier, on Monday, January 12, BNPB had reported 1,189 fatalities, 141 missing persons, and 195,542 evacuees, indicating that while the number of evacuees has since decreased, the death toll has continued to climb as search and verification efforts progress.
