TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has announced that the intense heat gripping Indonesia, with maximum temperatures recently hitting 37.6 degrees Celsius, is expected to persist until late October or early November 2025. BMKG attributes the sweltering conditions, especially notable during the day and night, to a combination of the sun's apparent movement and the influence of the Australian Monsoon.
Guswanto, BMKG's Deputy of Meteorology, explained that in October, the sun’s apparent movement is positioned south of the equator. The high temperatures are further exacerbated by the strengthening of the easterlies, or the Australian Monsoon, which transports warm and dry air masses.
This atmospheric setup minimizes cloud cover, allowing maximum solar radiation to reach the Earth's surface. "This position causes the central and southern regions of Indonesia, including Java, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, and Papua, to receive more intense sunlight, significantly raising the sensation of heat across many areas of the country," Guswanto said in a written statement on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

Areas Most Affected by Hot Weather
Andri Ramdhani, BMKG’s Director of Public Meteorology, indicated that daily maximum temperatures could exceed 35 degrees Celsius nationwide. Based on BMKG data, the highest temperatures are primarily impacting: most of Nusa Tenggara, western to eastern Java, western and central Kalimantan, southern and southeastern Sulawesi, as well as parts of Papua.
Temperature records highlight the severity of the conditions. On October 12, 2025, peak temperatures hit 36.8°C in Kapuas Hulu (West Kalimantan), Kupang (NTT), and Majalengka (West Java). On October 14, 2025, the temperature surged further, with Majalengka (West Java) and Boven Digoel (Papua) both recording a high of 37.6°C.
"The consistent high temperatures across many areas confirm the persistent hot weather, which is supported by the dominance of dry air masses and minimal cloud cover," Andri noted.
Rain Potential Amid Hot Weather
Despite the dominant dry heat, BMKG still anticipates the potential for local, convective rainfall in the late afternoon or evening across parts of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, and Papua.
Guswanto advised the public to take precautions: "Ensure an adequate intake of fluids and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the day, to maintain your health."
"Remain vigilant against the potential for sudden weather changes, such as rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds, in the late afternoon or evening," he issued a caution.
