TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Sumenep Regency, East Java, on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. The offshore tremor originated from a depth of 11 kilometers.

Based on a report from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at 11:49 p.m. local time. The quake's epicenter was at coordinates 7.25 degrees South Latitude (LS) and 114.22 degrees East Longitude (BT) or 50 kilometers southeast of Sumenep Regency.

"No tsunami potential," as stated in the X @infoBMKG account shortly after the shaking.

At least five aftershocks followed the main earthquake, BMKG reported, with the magnitude ranging from 3.2 to 4.3.

Here are some of the aftershocks recorded within one hour after the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in the southeastern waters of Sumenep Regency:

1. Magnitude 3.2 Earthquake, October 1, 2025, at 12:08 a.m. local time, Location: 7.28 LS, 114.12 BT (46 kilometers Southeast of Sumenep, East Java), Depth: 10 Kilometers

The BMKG suspects that the earthquake originated from the Rembang-Madura-Kangean-Sakala Fault or the RMKS Fault. However, the agency will still update information regarding the earthquake that occurred on Tuesday midnight. "This information prioritizes speed, so the processing results are not stable and can change as data becomes more complete," BMKG wrote.

There is no report about casualties or damage caused by this earthquake thus far.
