Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reminded sailors about the risk of high waves in the ocean, reaching up to 6 meters, due to wind patterns for the next few days. The latest early warning from BMKG regarding the increasing sea waves is valid until August 30.
Wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia generally move from the south at a speed of 6-25 knots. Meanwhile, winds in the southern part of Indonesia move from the east to southeast at a speed of about 10-25 knots. "The highest wind speed was observed in the Indian Ocean off the west of Lampung and south of Banten, as well as in the northern Pacific off Maluku," reads the early warning from BMKG on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
Similar to the observation of areas with the strongest winds, very high waves reaching 4-6 meters are likely to appear in the southern part of Banten and west of Lampung's Indian Ocean. The BMKG team also warns of the risk of high waves of 2.5-4 meters likely to occur in the waters off the west of Mentawai Islands, the southern Indian Ocean off West Java to East Java, and
The BMKG regularly advises fishermen with fishing boats to be aware of winds exceeding 15 knots, as well as sea waves above 1.25 meters. Barge ships must also pay attention to wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights exceeding 1.5 meters.
Captains of ferries are requested to be cautious when the wind speed exceeds 21 knots and wave heights reach 2.5 meters. Large fleets, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, are required to monitor conditions when the wind speed exceeds 27 knots and wave heights reach 4 meters.
