NEWS of a large-scale demonstration in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building on Monday, August 25, initiated by a movement calling itself the "Indonesian People's Revolution," has circulated on social media. The demonstration calls on civil society groups, including workers, farmers, and students, to take to the streets.
In its narrative, they demand an investigation into the alleged corruption cases involving the family of former President Joko Widodo and the impeachment of Gibran Rakabuming Raka. "Keep pressuring the parliament to perform its duty as a government watchdog," reads the message as received by Tempo on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The President of the Labor Party, Said Iqbal, stated that his group has several similar issues as those mentioned in the invitation for the demonstration on August 25, 2025. However, Said mentioned that the Labor Party will demonstrate on August 28, not on August 25, 2025. "Tens of thousands of laborers from various regions will demonstrate in front of the House of Representatives and the Presidential Palace," Said said in a brief message on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The labor party's demonstration titled "Eliminate Outsourcing and Reject Cheap Wages," Said said, will also be held in several industrial cities such as Serang, Banten, Samarinda, East Kalimantan, and Makassar. Said explained that their action is carried out so that the government can demonstrate its support for the working class, which is still burdened by low wages and not in line with the formula established by the Constitutional Court in decision 168, especially concerning inflation and economic growth.
Furthermore, Said stated that in the upcoming demonstration, the Labor Party will also highlight the housing allowance for members of the parliament, amounting to Rp 50 million per month, which is not aligned with the fate of workers who only earn Rp 5 million per month. "This is a clear picture of the wealth gap in this country," Said said.
When contacted separately, the Media Coordinator of the Alliance of the Executive Body of Students throughout Indonesia (BEM SI) for the People, Pasha Fazillah Afap, stated that their group will not take to the streets on August 25. "I confirm that the use of the name BEM SI for the People in the demonstration on August 25, 2025, is not true," said Pasha.
Pasha explained that BEM SI for the People had held a demonstration in front of the House of Representatives on Thursday, August 21, 2025. During the demonstration in front of the Parliament complex in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, students from various universities united in the BEM SI were involved in a push-and-shove with the police while protesting against the problematic revisions of the Criminal Code Law (KUHAP) and the Broadcasting Law, rejecting militarism in civil affairs, and stopping intimidation, criminalization, and terror against the people's movement.
"Democracy should belong to everyone, not militarism creeping into civil affairs and policies that instead cause harm to the people," Pasha said.
