Apple Aims for Smooth iPhone 17 Launch in Indonesia After TKDN Hurdles

TEMPO.CO, JakartaApple officially launched its iPhone 16 series in Indonesia on Friday, April 11, 2025, after a delay of approximately six to seven months. This delay was attributed to challenges in meeting the requirements of the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) – a regulation in Indonesia mandating a certain percentage of locally sourced components in manufactured goods.

The latest iPhone series includes five models: the iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16e.

Addressing the launch delay, Farah Fausa Winarsih, Head of Marketing for Apple Products at PT MAP Zona Adiperkasa, expressed optimism that the introduction of the next iPhone series would proceed without similar complications.

"Hopefully, hopefully not. Because everything regarding the requirements that the Apple team needs to fulfill has been completed. So, we are hopeful that there will be no more obstacles for the next iPhone," said Farah at Pacific Place Mall, Jakarta, on Friday.

Farah also highlighted the significant consumer interest in the iPhone 16, even though its release occurred close to the anticipated global launch of the iPhone 17.

"The enthusiasm is extraordinary. Initially, we thought, 'Oh, perhaps people will wait a few months for the iPhone 17 launch,' and maybe many have already purchased it overseas. But, it turns out that based on the sales figures we have achieved, the volume is much higher. I can say that the pre-orders exceeded our target," she elaborated.

Furthermore, regarding the previous generation of iPhones, Farah assured that Apple would continue to market select older models, noting that each product series caters to a specific market segment.

Previously, the Ministry of Industry of Indonesia and Apple had reached several agreements, including plans for the development of manufacturing facilities and research centers within the country. Both parties formalized this agreement on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

This agreement marked the end of complex negotiations between Apple and the Indonesian Government. In 2024, the tech giant faced a temporary ban on supplying the iPhone 16 to Indonesia due to its initial failure to meet the stipulated requirements for locally manufactured components and certain certification obligations.
