TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Lembang Fault has once again caused a small earthquake, the fifth in the last two months. The tremor was felt in Pasir Langu Village, West Bandung Regency, and was recorded by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 11:41 a.m. local time.

Hartanto, the Head of BMKG Region II Tangerang, reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 2.3. Its epicenter was on land, nine kilometers northwest of the center of Cimahi City, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

According to Daryono, BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, the earthquake originated from the western segment of the Lembang Fault. "We remind that there is an increase in seismic activity in the western segment of the Lembang Fault," he stated on Tuesday afternoon.

Increased Activity of the Lembang Fault

Based on earthquake data from 2010 to 2025 provided by Daryono, at least 18 earthquakes have been caused by Lembang Fault activity. Five of these have occurred just this year, between July and August.

The tremor from today's earthquake was felt in the Pasir Langu area with an intensity of II-III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity). The shaking was felt by several residents and caused hanging objects to swing. The vibration felt inside homes was comparable to that of a passing truck.

According to BMKG, there have been no reports of building damage from this most recent earthquake. Monitoring results show no subsequent earthquake activity for three hours following the initial event.

A previous earthquake from the Lembang Fault, whose tremors were also felt, was recorded by BMKG in the Pasir Langu and Jambudipa areas on Thursday afternoon, August 14, 2025. That earthquake had a magnitude of 1.8 and was reported to have originated from the Cimeta segment of the Lembang Fault.

Historically, Daryono mentioned that a damaging earthquake from the Lembang Fault occurred on August 28, 2011. That powerful tremor, with a magnitude of 3.3, was also triggered by activity in the Cimeta segment. The earthquake reportedly damaged 103 houses in Muril Rahayu Village, Jambudipa.

"This small-magnitude earthquake can cause damage because the hypocenter (depth of the earthquake's center) is shallow, the soil is soft, and it will have a greater impact if the building structure is weak," Daryono explained.
