TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vietnam’s national under-23 football team made history once again by winning the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup. In the final held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 29, Vietnam defeated host nation Indonesia 1-0 to secure their third consecutive championship.

This victory marked Vietnam's third title in the AFF U-23 Cup and solidified their position as the most successful team in the tournament’s history. The event, which targets players under the age of 23, has only seen three different ASEAN nations win since it began.

Of the five editions held so far, Indonesia remains one of only three countries to have lifted the trophy. Vietnam’s latest win also means they have now defeated Indonesia in two consecutive finals.

Here is a brief recap of all AFF U-23 Cup editions:

2005

The first AFF U-23 Cup took place in Thailand, which also won the tournament after a 3-0 victory over Singapore in the final.

2011

The tournament was canceled. Indonesia was set to host, but renovations at Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium led to its cancellation.

2019

Held in Cambodia, Indonesia claimed their first and only title by defeating Thailand 2-1 in the final, under the guidance of coach Indra Sjafri.

2022

Vietnam won the tournament after beating Thailand in the final. Cambodia hosted the event for the second time.

2023

Thailand played host again. Vietnam and Indonesia drew 0-0 in the final, which ended in a penalty shootout. Vietnam won 6-5 to clinch their second title.

2025

Vietnam secured their third consecutive AFF U-23 Cup title by edging past Indonesia 1-0 in the final. This marked Vietnam’s dominance in recent years and Indonesia’s second time finishing as runner-up.

The AFF U-23 Cup, although not held annually, has grown in prestige within Southeast Asian football. Vietnam’s consistent performance has set a high benchmark for other teams in the region.

With this victory, Vietnam continues to assert its dominance at the youth level, while Indonesia, despite falling short in the final, showed significant progress by reaching the tournament’s last stage once again.
