A Glimpse into Diogo Jota's Career, From Pacos de Ferreira to Liverpool Stardom

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Liverpool forward Diogo Jota passed away in a car accident in Spain on Thursday, July 3, 2025. The 28-year-old Portuguese international was traveling with his younger brother, Andre Silva, 26, when the crash occurred.

The accident took place on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora Province. According to Marca, the vehicle the brothers were in veered off the road and caught fire. Local authorities are still investigating the incident, with initial reports suggesting that a rear tire burst may have caused the driver to lose control.

Liverpool Football Club issued a brief statement expressing its grief. “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss."

Born Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, Jota was a key player for both the Portuguese national team and Liverpool FC. Known for his speed, skill, and clinical finishing, he primarily played as a forward, often operating on the left wing.

He had represented Portugal at various age levels—including U-19, U-21, and U-23—before earning his senior team debut in 2019. Over six years, he made 49 appearances for the national team and scored 14 goals.

Jota’s professional journey began with Paços de Ferreira between 2014 and 2016, where he made a strong impression with 14 goals in 41 matches. His performance caught the attention of Atlético Madrid, who signed him in 2016.

However, he spent most of his time on loan—first with FC Porto for the 2016–2017 season and then with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It was during his loan at Wolves that Jota’s talent truly flourished. He helped the club earn promotion to the Premier League and was signed permanently in 2017 for €14 million. Over three seasons, he scored 44 goals in 131 appearances.

On September 19, 2020, Jota signed with Liverpool for a reported transfer fee of €41 million. He quickly established himself as a key member of Jürgen Klopp’s squad, netting 65 goals in 182 appearances. With Liverpool, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. He also played in the UEFA Champions League final in the 2021–2022 season.

Jota had recently celebrated a personal milestone: his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22 in Porto. The couple had been together since high school and began dating in 2013. On Instagram, Rute posted photos of their wedding, writing, “My dream came true,” to which Jota replied, “I’m the lucky one.”

Jota’s passing has left a profound void in the football world. He will be remembered not only for his exceptional talent but also for his warmth, humility, and sportsmanship.
