TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 957 residents fled after the eruption of Mount Semeru, accompanied by avalanches of hot clouds. Several evacuation centers began filling up on Wednesday evening, November 19, 2025.

Information obtained by Tempo indicates that several evacuation centers have been prepared, including village halls, mosques, and school buildings. Data from the Lumajang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) indicates that approximately 100 people are occupying the Supiturang 04 Elementary School building. Approximately 500 people are at the Ar-Rahmah Mosque. Approximately 200 people are at the Sumberurip 02 Elementary School. Several residents are also taking refuge at the Oro-oro Ombo Village Hall.

Meanwhile, in Candipuro District, approximately 55 evacuees are occupying the house of the Sumbermujur Village Head and approximately 101 people are at the Candipuro District office. These evacuees are from Sumbersari Hamlet, Supiturang Village, Pronojiwo District, and are currently taking refuge at the Nurul Jadid Mosque and Supiturang 04 Elementary School.

Residents of Gunung Sawur Hamlet, Penanggal Village, Candipuro District, are currently taking refuge at the Penanggal Village Hall. The total number of evacuees as of Wednesday evening was approximately 957. The Lumajang Regency Government is still collecting data.

The Lumajang Regency Government will declare a seven-day emergency response status, from November 19 to November 26, 2025. With this emergency response status, Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati requested that the command post be immediately activated so that emergency disaster management can be carried out effectively.

"The safety of residents is our top priority. This evacuation is being carried out to protect every family, and the process has been designed to be safe and orderly," Indah said on Wednesday evening, November 19, 2025.

She said the local government and the Lumajang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) have prepared suitable evacuation sites. "Coordination is also ongoing with village officials and volunteers to facilitate the mobilization of residents," she said.

Previously, the Geological Agency raised Mount Semeru's volcanic activity level to level IV (alert) on Wednesday afternoon, November 19, 2025. The increased activity of the highest volcano on the island of Java followed an eruption and avalanche of hot clouds from the 3,676-meter-high volcano.

Head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, stated that the increase in activity to level IV (alert) was based on analysis and evaluation results. "Therefore, effective November 19, 2025, at 4:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time), the activity level of Mount Semeru has been raised from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Standby)," Wafid said in a written statement on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

An hour later, the Geological Agency raised Semeru's activity level from Level III to Level IV (Alert). At this level, the main recommendation is that the public, visitors, and tourists refrain from any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 20 kilometers of the summit (the eruption epicenter).
