TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Password or passcode is the first layer of protection for digital identity. Despite appearing trivial, the use of weak passwords can actually be a security vulnerability exploited by cybercriminals. Google suggests that users should not only create long and unique passwords, but also avoid personal information such as birth dates or pet names.
Summarized from Google Help Center, Terranova Security, and Avast, here are some tips for creating strong and secure passwords:
1. Avoid Personal Information
Do not use your full name, birth date, or other easily found information on social media. Hackers can exploit this simple information to guess passwords in seconds. Also, avoid using phone numbers or home addresses.
2. Use a Combination of Characters
A strong password consists of a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid patterns like "123456" or "password". Random combinations are also recommended as they are harder to crack, such as "F8!kLm@72". Also, avoid sequential keyboard patterns like "qwerty," which are often the main target of brute force attacks.
3. Create Longer Passwords
Passwords with a minimum of 12 to 16 characters are harder to crack. Use sentences, phrases, or song lyrics, or interesting modified quotes for easier recall, such as "@BumpIntoBumpIntoForm!"
4. Avoid Using the Same Password for Multiple Accounts
Using one password for all accounts is a big mistake. If one service is breached, other accounts are also at risk. Separate passwords for important accounts like email, banking, and main social media. Use variations or a special encoding system that only you understand.
5. Use a Password Manager
If you have difficulty remembering many passwords, use a Password Manager. This tool can store and automatically fill in strong and different passwords for each account. Choose a reliable and encrypted one, such as Bitwarden, 1Password, or the built-in feature in the browser.
6. Don't Write Anywhere
Avoid writing passwords on easily accessible paper or documents. If you need to note them down, keep them in a truly safe place that only you can access, both physically and digitally.
7. Evaluate and Change Passwords Regularly
Do not wait for a breach to change passwords. Conduct regular evaluations, especially if you receive warnings from certain services about suspicious login attempts. Passwords should ideally be updated every six months or more frequently, especially for important accounts.
8. Add Two-Factor Authentication
Strong passwords can still be breached, especially through phishing. Therefore, enhance account security by enabling two-factor authentication (2FA). Codes sent via SMS or authenticator apps can be the last barrier that complicates criminals.
