TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A total of 679 inmates at the Class I State Detention Center (Rutan) in Salemba Prison, Central Jakarta, Indonesia, received General Remission (RU) in commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's Independence Day on Monday (August 17).

The Head of the Class I Detention Center in Central Jakarta, Wahyu Trah Utomo, stated that the granting of remission serves as an incentive for inmates (referred to as correctional residents or WBP) to maintain good behavior and actively participate in rehabilitation programs.

"This remission is a form of appreciation for inmates who meet the requirements, as well as an incentive for them to continue behaving well and actively participating in rehabilitation programs," Wahyu said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday.

According to data from the Salemba Detention Center as of August 17, 2026, the total inmate population stood at 2,322, comprising 1,419 detainees (awaiting trial) and 903 convicted inmates.

Of the 680 inmates proposed for remission, 679 met the criteria and received the General Remission Decree.

A total of 625 individuals received RU I—remission that still leaves a remaining sentence to be served—while 54 individuals received RU II.

Of the 54 RU II recipients, 43 were declared eligible for release on August 17, 2026, following the granting of the remission.

Regarding the duration of the remission, 121 inmates received a one-month sentence reduction; 286 received two months; 207 received three months; 45 received four months; and 20 received five months.

In terms of case types, the remission recipients included 35 inmates convicted of corruption, 185 related to narcotics offenses, 10 convicted of money laundering, and 449 convicted of other offenses.

Wahyu stated that the remission was granted in accordance with applicable regulations, taking into account factors such as the inmates' behavior and their participation in rehabilitation programs while serving their sentences. He hopes that sentence reductions will encourage inmates to continue improving themselves, thereby preparing them to resume life in the community after completing their sentences.

“The hope is that granting these sentence reductions will motivate inmates to continue participating in rehabilitation programs, better themselves, and prepare for their return to society,” he said.
