5 Provinces Set for Evacuation After Russian Quake Triggers Tsunami Alert

21 hours ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is ensuring the active implementation of potential tsunami evacuation and displacement schemes across five provinces, following the escalation of the impact of the magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia.

BNPB Secretary-General Rustian, in a virtual press conference, said that evacuation remains crucial despite the tsunami threat from the Kamchatka earthquake still being undetermined in terms of its direct impact on Indonesia.

"The important thing is that when there is an early warning, we can respond by evacuating or moving to higher ground," said Rustian, while providing guidance to regional disaster management authorities during the press briefing, as quoted by Antara.

Together with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), BNPB has previously declared five provinces on alert for potential tsunamis. These provinces are North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, North Maluku, Papua, and West Papua.

As of Wednesday evening, the BNPB team confirmed that some coastal residents had carried out self-evacuation, including in Jayapura, Papua. Local residents moved together with joint task forces to occupy the Naval Base (Lanal) area.

According to Rustian, the displacement was self-initiated. "Some residents have also taken shelter at nearby relatives' homes," he said.

Tsunami Reaches Indonesian Shores

According to a BMKG report, the tsunami generated by the Russian earthquake has reached several coastal areas of Indonesia. A 0.2-meter-high tsunami wave was recorded in Jayapura DOK II, Depapre Jayapura, and Sarmi. Similar waves were also observed in Sorong and Sausapor, West Papua.

A smaller wave, measuring 0.08 meters, was detected at Daeo Majiko Port in Morotai, North Maluku. The tsunami in Jayapura DOK II was recorded at 02:14 PM WIB, while the wave in Morotai was observed at 03:17 PM WIB.

BMKG has urged residents living near the coast to remain vigilant and stay away from the shoreline. As of 04:30 PM WIB, BMKG reported 43 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 4.7 to 6.9.

BMKG also reported that the highest sea level rise from the tsunami was observed in Haleiwa, Hawaii, at 1.5 meters (12:35 PM WIB).

In Russia, the highest tsunami wave reached 0.8 meters in Kamchatka (06:51 AM WIB), while Japan recorded up to 0.4 meters in Ofunato (08:47 AM WIB). In Papua New Guinea, the tsunami wave reached 0.3 meters in Lombrom (02:02 PM WIB).
