TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has called for a boycott against Starbucks after over 1,000 workers went on strike nationwide. According to NDTV, the workers organized by Starbucks Workers United are demanding better pay, improved staff, and resolution of hundreds of complaints of unfair labor practices.
Zohran Mamdani responded to a tweet by Starbucks Workers United, asking people to avoid drinking coffee at Starbucks and urging others to join him in the boycott.
"Starbucks workers across the country are on an Unfair Labor Practices strike, fighting for a fair contract. While workers are on strike, I won't be buying any Starbucks, and I'm asking you to join us," he wrote on social media platform X.
"Together, we can send a powerful message: No contract, no coffee," Zohran Mamdani said.
He stated that Starbucks workers nationwide are on strike against unfair labor practices. "While workers are on strike, I won't be buying any Starbucks, and I'm asking you to join us," wrote Zohran Mamdani.
Last Thursday, the labor union at X announced that Starbucks employees nationwide are going on strike. They called it the Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike and warned that this could be the largest and longest in the company's history.
The workers referred to it as an open-ended strike and vowed to continue until their demands are met. They dubbed this strike as the "Red Cup Rebellion".
The strike coincided with Starbucks' annual Red Cup Day, one of the company's busiest events. On that day, there were long queues as customers picked up the free reusable holiday cups.
The labor union stated that Starbucks has violated labor laws more than nearly any other company recently. They noted that the National Labor Relations Board's Administrative Law Judge found that the company committed more than 400 labor law violations.
The strike has drawn workers from over 25 cities, including New York, Dallas, Seattle, Ohio, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia.
