TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s top-seeded men’s singles shuttler Jonatan Christie suffered an early exit at the Australian Open 2025, bowing out in the round of 32 to Japan’s Yushi Tanaka in straight games on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

Playing at the Quaycentre on Olympic Boulevard in Sydney, the world No. 4 was outplayed in just 32 minutes. Jonatan fell 17–21, 7–21 to the world No. 26, marking one of the day’s biggest upsets.

Jonatan admitted the match was far below his expectations. “Today was far from what we had prepared. My performance was poor, and I couldn’t develop my game,” the 28-year-old said in a statement released by the PBSI media team.

He lamented his inability to capitalize during the first game. “Several times I managed to close the gap, but I still lost the points. A few shots hitting the net broke my momentum when I was trying to catch up,” he said.

The player, widely known as Jojo, said he intends to reset quickly and shift his focus to upcoming events.

“From this match, I know I need to refresh my mind. Let go of everything that’s passed and refocus on what’s ahead, because the BWF World Tour Finals are still coming.”

Jonatan’s early exit from the BWF Super 500 tournament means he missed a chance to add to his 2025 title collection, which includes victories at the Korea Open, Denmark Open, and Hylo Open.
