TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tens of thousands of pro-Palestine protesters, including WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, lined up across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, August 3, 2025, shutting down the famous landmark.
As reported by Al Arabiya, Julian Assange, who returned to Australia last year after being released from a high-security prison in the UK, was photographed surrounded by family. He marched alongside former Australian Foreign Minister and New South Wales Premier Bob Carr.
The pro-Palestine crowd braved strong winds and rain to march across the bridge, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the liberation of Palestine. The New South Wales Police said they had deployed hundreds of additional staff across Sydney to secure the rally.
Mehreen Faruqi, the New South Wales senator for the left-wing Greens party, addressed the crowd at Lang Park in central Sydney, stating that the rally would make history. She called for the harshest sanctions against Israel. She also accused the Israeli army of massacring Palestinians in Gaza and criticized New South Wales Premier Chris Minns for saying the protest should not go ahead.
Dozens of protesters held banners listing the names of thousands of Palestinian children killed in the Israeli onslaught since October 2023. Labor Party parliament member, Ed Husic, attended the march and urged his ruling party, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, to recognize the state of Palestine.
Assange did not address the crowd or talk to the media.
As quoted from Sky News, one protester, Sarah, traveled from the Blue Mountains outside Sydney to attend the rally. She urged the Australian government to take stronger action against the genocide in Gaza.
Sarah also said that Australians want people to know that they care about what is happening in the world.
Australia did not join France, the UK, and Canada in announcing plans to recognize the state of Palestine in September. The Australian government stated that recognition is a matter of when, not if, but has yet to decide when it will recognize the state of Palestine.
