TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U.S. President Donald Trump administration has informed Persian Gulf nations that in upcoming talks with Tehran, Washington will focus on Iran's nuclear program rather than the reopening of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, CNN reported, citing several sources.
As quoted by ANTARA, the three sources said Trump administration officials privately informed Gulf states that Washington wants future U.S.-Iran talks to focus on Tehran's nuclear program rather than the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the television station reported.
On February 28, the U.S. and Israel began launching attacks against several targets in Iran, which subsequently triggered retaliatory attacks from the Iranian side.
In mid-June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding to halt hostilities, although both sides subsequently resumed attacks against each other.
To this day, the conflict remains unresolved.
The conflict escalation has nearly brought shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to a standstill. The strait is a vital supply route for global markets for oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas. Consequently, fuel prices have risen in most countries around the world.
