TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Association of Archivists (AAI) in Central Java held a Coordination and Assessment activity on the condition of the archives at the Prof. Dr. R. Soeharso Surakarta Disability Rehabilitation Center. This activity was organized in collaboration with UNESCO.
The Head of the Archives and Library Office of Central Java Province, Rahmah Nur Hayati, said the purpose of this activity was to evaluate the conditions of historical archives from the 1950s to the 1970s and to plan for restoration and digitalization efforts. She stated that this is in line with the spirit of Law Number 43 of 2009 concerning Archives.
Rahmah said that the Soeharso Rehabilitation Center archives have been recognized as part of the national collective memory since May 13, 2022, and are registered with the UNESCO program Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific on November 26, 2022. "Let us preserve the nation's collective memory for future generations," she said, as quoted in a written statement on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The event took place at the Noorman Hotel in Semarang and was attended by 200 participants. As the UNESCO Program Specialist, Ana Lomtadze, who attended virtually, emphasized the importance of preserving these archives as part of the documentary heritage reflects the nation's dignity, resilience, and innovation.
Ana mentioned that this initiative includes the rescue of more than 2,600 archive items, as well as capacity building through training, workshops, database creation, and a digital exhibition accessible to academics, educators, and the general public. She also highlighted the important role of the Soeharso Rehabilitation Center in the history of Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific region.
According to her, these archives record the process of rehabilitation of people with disabilities post-independence, innovation in inclusive rehabilitation, and the empowerment of the community involving women. Known as the first and largest rehabilitation center in Asia, the Soeharso Rehabilitation Center has been a regional reference in the service and empowerment of people with disabilities since the 1950s to the 1970s.
The event was attended by archivists from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI), the Archives and Library Office of Central Java, the Prof. Dr. Soeharso Integrated Center, AAI Central Java, the Archives and Library Office of Semarang City, and students from Diponegoro University and Sebelas Maret University.
