TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The governments of the United Kingdom and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to the Global Fund's efforts to combat HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), and malaria as persistent global health threats.
Indonesia’s Deputy Health Minister, Dante Saksono Harbuwono, stated that the partnership extends beyond mere financing, reflecting a deep spirit of collaboration.
"Since 2003, the Global Fund has helped strengthen the healthcare system and expand diagnostic services," Dante said during a meeting at the British Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The meeting was also attended by the Spiritia Foundation and the Global Fund Advocates Network Asia-Pacific.
Global Fund Impact and Indonesia's Contribution
The Global Fund operates as a crucial international public-private partnership, pooling resources to fight these three major diseases, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It actively collaborates with governments, civil society, the private sector, and affected communities.
Through the Debt2Health program, Indonesia has executed four debt restructurings (in 2007, 2010, 2021, and 2024). These efforts resulted in health investments worth US$201 million and debt relief totaling US$272 million. The local funds are specifically used to strengthen disease control and enhance domestic drug production.
To date, the Global Fund has disbursed US$1.67 billion for HIV, TB, and malaria programs in Indonesia. In 2024 alone, this support reached 845,627 TB patients, 621,257 malaria patients, and 231,247 individuals receiving antiretroviral HIV therapy.
International Solidarity and Future Goals
British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, hailed the Global Fund as a tangible example of effective international cooperation. The UK stands as the world's third-largest public donor, with a contribution of US$5.6 billion.
"Over two decades, the Global Fund has saved more than 70 million lives," the Ambassador stated.
Lady Roslyn Morauta, Chair of the Global Fund Board, stressed that the eighth replenishment of funds is crucial for global health resilience.
"The HIV, TB, and malaria epidemics still pose serious threats and require bold and coordinated actions," Lady Morauta said, highlighting the significant progress made and the continued need for global solidarity.
Ani Herna Sari, Chair of the Rekat Peduli Foundation, underscored the vital role of community involvement: "Health investments should empower affected communities for more inclusive and sustainable preventive efforts."
The Global Fund aims to raise US$18 billion for the upcoming 2027–2029 period. This new funding goal is expected to save up to 23 million lives and significantly strengthen the global healthcare system's resilience against future pandemic threats.
