TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States claimed that over 50 countries have contacted the White House to renegotiate Trump-imposed tariffs, said the National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett on Sunday, April 6, 2025.
“So the fact is, the countries are angry and retaliating and, by the way, coming to the table. I got a report from the (US Trade Representative) last night that more than 50 countries have reached out to the president to begin a negotiation,” he said, as quoted from Anadolu on Monday, April 7.
In an interview with ABC News ‘This Week’ program, he denied that the tariffs were part of Trump’s strategy to disrupt the financial market in order to pressure the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut interest rates.
He stated that there would be no political coercion from the central bank. In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump shared a video indicating that his tariffs were aimed at deliberately hitting the stock market in an effort to force lower interest rates.
In a separate interview on Meet the Press NBC News, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed the stock market drop, claiming there’s no reason to fear recession based on tariffs, citing U.S. jobs growth.
Trump has shaken the global economy after announcing tariffs on imports to the United States last Wednesday, which prompted China to retaliate and raised concerns about a global trade war and recession.
During a Sunday morning talk show, top Trump officials sought to portray the tariffs as a smart repositioning by the U.S. in the global trade order and economic disruption as a short-term impact.
The U.S. stocks plunged by 10 percent in two days after Trump’s announcement, which market analysts say was more aggressive than anticipated. According to most economists and U.S. Fed chair, Trump's policy will likely lead to “higher inflation and slower growth.”
Citing Al Jazeera, U.S. allies have already expressed interest in initiating trade talks and avoiding the tariffs. Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te on Sunday offered zero tariffs as a basis for discussions with the U.S., pledging to remove trade barriers instead of countermeasures.
