TEMPO.CO, JakartaTyphoon Kajiki killed at least three people and injured 10 others in Vietnam, authorities said Tuesday, August 26, 2025, as reported by CNA, warning that heavy rains could cause flooding and landslides.

The storm damaged nearly 7,000 homes, inundated 28,800 hectares of rice fields, and uprooted 18,000 trees, the government said in a statement. Typhoon Kajiki also knocked down 331 electricity poles, causing widespread power outages in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Thai Nguyen, and Phu Tho provinces.

Photos in state media showed streets in the capital, Hanoi, severely flooded by heavy rains that fell on Tuesday morning.

After making landfall on Vietnam's north-central coast on Monday afternoon, Kajiki weakened to a tropical depression as it moved toward Laos on Tuesday morning, the national weather agency said.

The agency warned that rain would continue to fall in parts of northern Vietnam, with some areas likely to receive up to 150 millimeters of rain in six hours, potentially causing flash floods and landslides.

Before making landfall in Vietnam, Kajiki struck the southern coast of Hainan Island, China, on Sunday, forcing the island's Sanya City to shut down businesses and public transportation.

Vietnam has closed airports, shut schools, and begun mass evacuations in preparation for the strongest storm of the year.

Authorities in Vietnam evacuated more than half a million people from the east coast before Typhoon Kajiki made landfall on Monday.

The Vietnamese government compared Typhoon Kajiki's strength to Typhoon Yagi, which struck the country less than a year ago. Typhoon Yagi killed about 300 people and caused US$5 billion in property damage.

The typhoon—the fifth typhoon to hit Vietnam this year—is currently at sea, battering the Gulf of Tonkin with waves as high as 9.5 meters. The center of the storm is expected to hit the area between Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces.

With a long coastline facing the South China Sea, Vietnam is prone to typhoons that are often deadly and trigger dangerous floods and landslides.

More than 325,500 residents in five coastal provinces have been scheduled to evacuate to schools and public buildings converted into temporary shelters, authorities said.

The seaside city of Vinh was flooded overnight, its streets largely deserted in the morning, with most shops and restaurants closed as residents and business owners blocked their property entrances with sandbags.

By dawn, nearly 30,000 people had been evacuated from the area, while 16,000 military personnel were mobilized.

Two airports in Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh provinces have been closed, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have canceled dozens of flights to and from the region.

All fishing vessels in the typhoon's path have been called back to port.
