TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Tuesday, November 4, David Beckham received a knighthood from King Charles III in a ceremony at Windsor Castle. Supported by his wife and parents, the 50-year-old soccer legend was honored for his “services to sport and charity.”
Beckham called the knighthood his “proudest moment.” He spoke emotionally about it, saying he “couldn’t be prouder,” adding, “people know how patriotic I am — I love my country.”
Beckham also expressed how it feels otherworldly, as he said to PA News after the ceremony, “I’ve been very fortunate in my career and proud of everything I’ve achieved, but receiving a knighthood is beyond anything I ever dreamed of.”
He added, “As a boy from Leytonstone in East London, standing here at Windsor Castle and being honored by His Majesty the King — by the most respected institution in the world — it’s truly an incredible moment.”
Dressed in a tailored suit designed by his wife, Victoria Beckham, this honor for Sir David Beckham, as he is now known, reflects the remarkable achievements that have defined his career.
As highlighted by ESPN, Beckham earned 115 caps for England, serving as captain for 59 matches, cementing his legacy as one of the nation’s most legendary players.
On the club level, Beckham’s decorated playing career saw him win six Premier League titles with Manchester United before moving on to represent Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain, and AC Milan.
Even after retiring in 2013, he has remained a prominent figure in global football, as he serves as president and co-owner of MLS side Inter Miami, the club that made global headlines by signing Lionel Messi.
Beyond the pitch, Beckham has long been recognized for his philanthropic work. As noted by CNN and ESPN, he has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005 and launched the “7 Fund” in 2015, addressing children at risk around the world, including those affected by crises such as Ebola.
Last year, he was also named an ambassador for The King’s Foundation, an educational charity founded by King Charles in 1990. For this appointment, Beckham described proudly, calling himself a “huge royalist.”
