TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, known as BMKG, has urged coastal residents and fishermen in Manokwari Regency, West Papua, to be wary of the potential tsunami on Wednesday at 16:18 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time) or 04:18 PM.
BMKG Climatology Station Prakirawan in Rendani, Manokwari, Agus Susilo, mentioned the early tsunami warning following an 8.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at 06:24 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) in the Kamchatka Sea, Russia.
"This earthquake has the potential to trigger tsunami waves in several areas in Indonesia, including Manokwari Regency," said Agus.
He explained that the warning status for Manokwari is at the cautious level, which means the coastal area has the potential to be affected by a tsunami with wave heights of less than 0.5 meters.
BMKG continues to actively monitor through the national and international tsunami monitoring system. BMKG also recommends suspending activities in coastal areas for the time being.
"This includes fishing activities by fishermen, which we suggest to be temporarily halted," said Agus.
He mentioned that the early tsunami warning applies to several regions in eastern Indonesia, including the provinces of Sulawesi, North Maluku, Papua, West Papua, and Southwest Papua with a PD-2 Tsunami Warning category.
Seven areas in Papua are categorized as being cautious of a tsunami, including Manokwari, northern Raja Ampat, Biak Numfor, Supiori, northern Sorong, Jayapura, and Sarmi.
BMKG invites the entire community to continue following official information from BMKG through the Info BMKG application, the inatews.bmkg.go.id site, as well as verified BMKG social media accounts.
