TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At the Governors Awards on Sunday, Tom Cruise received an honorary Oscar in recognition of his outstanding lifetime achievement.
The 63-year-old actor, a four-time Academy Award nominee, accepted the honor more than three decades after earning his first nomination.
As The Independent notes, the award was presented by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is set to be the driving force behind Cruise’s next film.
After taking the stage with the Academy Award of Merit on his hand, Cruise expressed heartfelt gratitude, praised fellow filmmakers and actors for their work and the inspiration they’ve given him, as well as reflected on his own 45-years-long journey on screen.
In an emotional address, he shared his heartfelt thoughts on how filmmaking extends beyond a profession and has become a core part of his identity.
“And no matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”
Best known for performing his own stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise was also praised by Academy President Janet Yang when his nomination was announced in June. She hailed his “incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community.”
Embracing his passion for acting feels only natural when considering how early his love for cinema sparked.
“My love for cinema began at a very early age, as early as I can remember.” Then continued, “I was just a little kid in a darkened theatre, and I remember that beam of light just cut across the room, and I remember looking up, and it seemed to be just exploding on the screen. Suddenly, the world was so much larger than the one that I knew.”
According to Yahoo! Entertainment, the Mission: Impossible star had never won an Oscar prior to this moment. He had been nominated four times, including Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July, Best Actor for Jerry Maguire, Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia, and Best Picture for Top Gun: Maverick.
Reflecting on Cruise’s remarkable dedication, director Alejandro G. Iñárritu praised the significance of his long-awaited recognition, saying, “This may be his first Oscar, but from what I have seen and experienced, this will not be the last.”
