TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto discussed the continuation of the KF-21 Boramae (Korean Fighter Xperiment/Indonesian Fighter Xperiment) project during a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. The meeting took place at the Blue House, the South Korean Presidential Palace, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
"So, during the bilateral meeting, one of the issues raised was indeed related to the IFX," said Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto after attending the Indonesia-Korea Partnership for Resilient Growth forum in Seoul on Wednesday.
According to Airlangga, the president emphasized his commitment to sending a team to South Korea immediately as a follow-up to their collaboration on developing the fighter aircraft. "The President conveyed that he will soon send a team, both in technical and engineering aspects," said Airlangga.
South Korea has engaged Indonesia in the development of the fighter jet as agreed during the era of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono through a cooperation agreement in 2010. The project then continued during Joko Widodo's administration and remains ongoing as Prabowo took over the government.
The total investment in this project, launched in 2015, has reached 8.1 trillion Korean won (equivalent to Rp95.32 trillion). Initially, Indonesia bore 20 percent of the total amount, amounting to 1.6 trillion. The remaining 60 percent is covered by the South Korean government, and the remaining 20 percent by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).
The KF-21 project was delayed due to Indonesia's payment postponement. In 2025, South Korea finally agreed to reduce Indonesia's contribution to only 600 billion.
Airlangga Hartarto stated that there are still a number of technical issues to be discussed, including aircraft specifications. In addition, Indonesia also hopes for a new payment scheme. "But the hope is that this will be resolved by sending a team there," said Airlangga.
About two weeks before Prabowo's state visit to South Korea, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported the plan to export 16 units of the KF-21 fighter jet to Indonesia. This number is lower than the initial plan of 48 units.
