TEMPO.CO, Karawang - President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the project groundbreaking of the integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery industry ecosystem in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
The development is part of the EV battery downstream project, comprising six integrated sub-projects. The project is co-developed by PT Aneka Tambang (ANTAM), Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and the CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL) Consortium.
Five of the six projects are located in East Halmahera, North Maluku, and one in Karawang.
According to Prabowo, the project is historical and holds strategic value. He claimed that the groundbreaking of the EV battery project ecosystem proves the government's commitment to establishing cooperation with partner countries—in this case, China.
"We are working together on a project that, in my opinion, is colossal. It can be said that this is an extraordinary breakthrough," said Prabowo in his speech.
Prabowo also stated that downstreaming of natural resources will be continued in a transparent manner. The government also plans to accelerate it, as the key to development lies in the ability to process natural resources into useful materials with high added value.
"To drive prosperity and welfare," he said.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said that the EV battery project has been underway for four years. It was initiated as a collaboration between Indonesia, the country with the raw materials, and China, the one with the technology.
The project is developed with an investment of US$5.9 billion. "Around Rp100 trillion," said Bahlil, claiming that the EV battery project creates 35,000 indirect jobs and 8,000 jobs directly linked to the development.
